Sustaining the Advocate
You should not have to disappear inside your work to remain excellent at it.
A six-week professional development experience for lawyers who want to sustain their careers without sacrificing themselves.
You have spent years developing your professional judgment, strengthening your advocacy skills, and learning how to carry responsibility.
But who taught you how to sustain yourself while doing all of that?
The legal profession demands intellectual rigour, sound judgment, composure, and an extraordinary capacity to manage competing responsibilities.
Over time, those demands can come at a cost.
Sustaining the Advocate is a structured, small-group professional development program designed to help lawyers examine the demands of their work, protect their professional capacity, and develop practical ways to continue their careers on more sustainable terms.
You do not have to abandon your ambition to preserve your well-being.
And you do not have to wait until you are completely overwhelmed to make meaningful changes.
Next cohort: November 16, 2026

The problem isn’t always your capacity. Sometimes it’s what your work requires you to carry.
Lawyers are trained to respond.
To meet deadlines. To anticipate problems. To manage risk. To exercise judgment under pressure. To represent interests that may carry enormous consequences.
These are essential professional competencies.
But sustained professional effectiveness requires more than the ability to perform under pressure.
It also requires the ability to recognize limits, establish workable structures, make deliberate decisions, and preserve the personal resources on which professional performance depends.
For many lawyers, these capacities receive far less deliberate attention than technical competence. The result can be a career that continues to advance while becoming increasingly difficult to sustain.
What if professional excellence and personal sustainability were not competing priorities? What if you could develop a clearer understanding of what your work requires, what your capacity permits, and what needs to change?
That is the work of Sustaining the Advocate.
Introducing Sustaining the Advocate
A different conversation about professional sustainability and responsibility.
Sustaining the Advocate is not another invitation to become more resilient so that you can tolerate increasingly unsustainable demands. Nor is it a productivity program designed to help you fit more obligations into an already full life.
It is an opportunity to examine how you work, the conditions under which you work best, and the structures that help you remain professionally effective over time.
Over six weeks, you will participate in guided learning, structured reflection, facilitated discussion and practical exercises that connect directly to the realities of legal practice.
The objective is not to create an idealized version of your career. It is to help you develop a more deliberate, realistic, and sustainable way of continuing it. You are not learning how to endure indefinitely. You are learning how to continue intentionally.
Who is this program for?
Sustaining the Advocate is designed for lawyers at different stages of practice who recognize that sustaining a meaningful career requires intentional attention. You may be performing well professionally while privately questioning the cost of maintaining that performance. You may be navigating significant responsibilities, persistent workplace pressure, professional uncertainty, or a period of transition.
You may be returning to professional work after an interruption, reconsidering how you want to practice, or simply looking for more sustainable ways to approach an otherwise rewarding career. You do not need to be experiencing burnout to participate.
You do not need to be contemplating leaving the profession.
And you do not need to share personal or medical information to benefit from the program.
You only need to be willing to examine how you practise and what you need in order to continue well.
What You will explore over six weeks
The program introduces a structured approach to professional sustainability, drawing on the core themes of a proprietary model framework. You will understand what you carry, protect professional capacity, create workable structures, support the person behind the advocate, practice sustainability, and create a plan forward.
